Topaz:

The etymology of the name ‘topaz’ is uncertain, but it may derive from the island of Topazios in the Red Sea. The term ‘topaz’ was once used to describe all yellow to brown gemstones. Among the most prized varieties is Imperial Topaz, mainly mined in Brazil (particularly in Ouro Preto), characterised by its intense golden to orange-red colour. Topazes from Pakistan and Russia can also be found in similar shades. Darker shades can be achieved by heating certain pale yellow topazes, which causes them to turn pink, or by irradiating them to intensify their blue colour. It forms in pegmatite veins, cavities in volcanic rocks, or in alluvial deposits. Topaz is often colourless, but it can take on various colours due to various impurities (chromium, iron, cobalt, etc.).
The main topaz deposits are found in Brazil, the United States, Pakistan and Mexico.
