Its name evokes the mixture of the two minerals that make it up: azurite and malachite. The word ‘azurite’ derives from the Persian ‘lazhward’, meaning ‘blue’; the name ‘malachite’ is thought to derive from the Greek ‘malachē’, referring to a plant whose leaves resemble its deep green colour. The history of azurite-malachite is inextricably linked to that of copper, the first metal to be worked by humans. These two copper carbonates form on the surface of ore deposits and served as the first visual indicators for miners to locate the veins.
Traces of these stones have been found in powdered form in vessels dating from the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt. Azurite, described by Pliny the Elder as ‘Lapis Armenius’, was prescribed to treat melancholy and blood disorders. In ancient Egypt, ground malachite was used as green eye shadow, believed to protect the eyes from infection and the sun.

Azurite-malachite:
Its name is derived from its composition, which combines azurite and malachite.
Azurite was given its current name in 1824, derived from the Persian word ‘Lazhward’, meaning ‘blue’.
However, it had already been known since ancient times: traces of this stone have been discovered in powder form in ointment jars dating from the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt.
The origin of the name ‘malachite’ is uncertain but may derive from the Greek ‘malakos’, meaning ‘soft’, as it is a soft stone.
Another theory is that its name comes from another Greek word, ‘malache’, meaning ‘mauve’. The reason for this is that the colour of this mineral resembles that of mauve leaves.
Azurite-malachite displays a combination of colours, generally shades of deep blue (from the azurite) and green (from the malachite).
Azurite and malachite are copper carbonates.
The main deposits of azurite-malachite are found in Namibia, Australia, Canada and the United States.
