Did you know? Burmese jade (or jadeite) is a symbol of virtue, power and immortality in Asia. It is often said there that gold has a price, but jade is priceless. Indeed, it is the subject of numerous legends and prestigious artefacts. Its name derives from the Spanish ‘piedra de ijada’, meaning ‘stone of the flanks’, as popular belief held that jade possessed healing properties to treat kidney problems. For a long time, two stones were mistakenly grouped under the name ‘jade’. It was not until 1863 that the French mineralogist Alexis Damour proved that there were two distinct species: on the one hand, nephrite, which is more common and olive-green in colour; and on the other, jadeite, which is much rarer and more precious. It is the latter that boasts the most vivid colours and great hardness. Its structure makes it very strong. Although it is mainly known for its so-called ‘imperial’ green jade, it comes in a variety of unexpected colours: lavender, red, white and even black. Almost all high-quality jadeite comes from a small region in northern Burma (Myanmar), near the town of Hpakan.

The Pi or Bi disc (in Chinese 璧) originates from Chinese culture. It is a disc whose origins date back to the Neolithic period and which was mainly carved from jade. This disc symbolises the perfection of Heaven, in contrast to the square representing the Earth. A sign of high social status and a protective amulet, it embodies nobility and harmony. It was also used as a ritual and funerary object. Even today, the Pi disc is believed to have the power to harmonise energies and bring serenity. Each stone is unique, which is why the stone you receive may differ slightly from those shown in the photograph.

Care instructions:

• Store your jewellery in a dry place, away from light and heat.
• Protect the stones from knocks. We recommend removing your jewellery before any sporting activity.
• Burmese jade is a fairly hard-wearing stone. However, you should avoid acids and solvents (vinegar, lemon, acetone, etc.) as well as perfumes and essential oils.
• Although jade is hard, it may have micro-cracks that are invisible to the naked eye. It is therefore not advisable to clean it using ultrasonic cleaners.
• If your jade seems to have lost its lustre, you can apply a drop of camellia oil or sweet almond oil to the stone using a cotton pad.
