Pi Donut Pendant in Abalone Shell

Description:

Abalone shell pendant with a black or brown nylon cord included.

Did you know? The name ‘ormeau’ comes from the Old French ‘oreille de mer’ (sea ear), referring to the shape of the shell, which resembles an ear. It is also known by its English name, abalone. Abalones are molluscs belonging to the Haliotidae family. The mother-of-pearl in their shells is recognisable by its vibrant colours. Pacific Islander peoples used to carve it and use it as a form of currency. Its flesh is still highly prized in cooking. It is mainly harvested in the shallow waters of lagoons along the coasts of the Pacific Ocean (California, Mexico, Japan, Australia, New Zealand), but also in France (Brittany and Normandy) and South Africa.

The Pi or Bi disc (in Chinese, 璧) originates from Chinese culture. It is a ring whose origins date back to the Neolithic period and which was mainly carved from jade. This disc symbolises the perfection of Heaven, in contrast to the square, which represents the Earth. A sign of high social status and a protective amulet, it embodies nobility and harmony. It was also used as a ritual and funerary object. Even today, the Pi disc is believed to have the power to harmonise energies and bring serenity. Each gem is unique, which is why the gem you receive may differ slightly from those shown in the photograph.

Care instructions:

  • Store your jewellery away from light and heat.
  • Protect your mother-of-pearl from knocks. We recommend removing your jewellery before any sporting activity.
  • Avoid chemicals: remove your pendant before using perfume, hairspray, sun cream or household cleaning products. Similarly, mother-of-pearl is sensitive to acidic products, which can cause it to lose its lustre.
  • Do not use ultrasonic cleaners, as the vibrations can cause cracks in the mother-of-pearl’s structure.
  • Some gemstones do not tolerate water well; ensure that water will not damage your jewellery before getting it wet. There are several methods for cleansing your gemstones; please see here: caring for and cleansing gemstones
