Noble opals:
The word ‘opal’ derives from the Sanskrit ‘upala’, meaning ‘precious stone’. Opals are known for their iridescent, colour-shifting play of light. They display a full spectrum of colours: red, orange, green, blue and purple, … This effect is caused by the diffraction (bending) of light due to the stone’s structure. Precious opals are rare and highly prized. The conditions under which precious opals form are generally associated with specific geological environments, such as ancient dried-up lakes or areas of sedimentary deposits rich in silica. There are various varieties of noble opals: white opal, black opal, matrix opal, hydrophane opal, fire opal, … Australian black opal, particularly that from Lightning Ridge, is considered one of the most valuable in the world, distinguished by its vivid iridescence. Opal always contains a certain percentage of water, ranging from 3 per cent to 30 per cent. Welo opals from Ethiopia, also known as hydrophane opals, are sensitive to dehydration. This causes them to lose their play of colour and develop cracks. To slow down this process, hydrophane opals can be stored in damp cotton wool or in a bathroom. Be careful, however, not to soak Welo opals in water, as they may temporarily lose their play of colour and take on a dull appearance before drying out again. Opals are generally delicate stones: they are sensitive to scratches, heat, cosmetics and chemicals.
The main deposits of noble opal are found in Australia, Ethiopia and Mexico.
