Fluorite:
Fluorite is composed of calcium fluoride, from which it takes its name. It is also known as fluorine. Fluorite is renowned for its varied colours, which can include purple, green, blue, yellow, pink and brown. Fluorite crystals are often transparent to translucent. As well as being used in jewellery, fluorite is mined for use in various industries, including metallurgy. It is also used in the manufacture of optical glass due to its transparency. It is a soft stone and must be handled with care to avoid scratching it!
The main fluorite deposits are found in South Africa, China, Mexico, Spain, Germany and the United States.
