Rhodochrosite:
Rhodochrosite, whose name derives from the Greek ‘rhodon’ meaning rose, and ‘khros’ meaning colour, is a gemstone ranging in colour from pink to red, prized for its distinctive beauty. Mineralogically, it belongs to the carbonate family, with a chemical composition consisting mainly of manganese carbonate. This gemstone forms primarily in manganese ore deposits, often associated with other minerals such as calcite, pyrite or fluorite. It generally forms in hydrothermal environments, where manganese-rich solutions come into contact with calcareous materials. The peoples of Mesoamerica, specifically in Peru and Argentina, used this stone to create ornaments, sculptures and jewellery.
The main deposits of rhodochrosite are found in: Argentina, Peru, South Africa, China, the United States, Mexico and Romania
