Hematite:
The name ‘haematite’ is derived from the Latin ‘haematites’, meaning ‘blood’.
Haematite has a long history of use. It has been used to make pigments and jewellery since ancient times.
In ancient Egypt, it was believed that haematite could cure blood-related illnesses.
Haematite is mainly composed of iron oxide. It forms in a variety of geological environments.
It is generally silver-grey to black in colour, but can take on reddish-brown hues.
It can have a metallic sheen and a glossy surface. Haematite crystals are often silvery and shiny.
Nowadays, it is one of the minerals most commonly used in the manufacture of metal alloys such as steel.
The main deposits of haematite are found in Brazil, France, Italy, China and Russia.
