Mother-of-pearl:
Mother-of-pearl is an iridescent organic material produced by certain molluscs, mainly oysters, mussels and abalones.
The word ‘mother-of-pearl’ derives from the Arabic ‘naqqarah’, meaning ‘shell’.
Mother-of-pearl is composed of superimposed layers of aragonite crystals – a polymorph of calcium carbonate – interwoven with conchyolin, an organic protein substance.
This layered structure gives mother-of-pearl its pearly appearance and its shimmering play of colours, which vary depending on thickness and the angle from which it is viewed.
Mother-of-pearl forms naturally inside the shells of molluscs when they secrete layers of aragonite crystals to cover foreign irritants, such as grains of sand or parasites, that enter their shells.
Over time, these layers build up to form mother-of-pearl; this process can also result in the formation of pearls.
The main sources of mother-of-pearl are: China, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia.
