Kyanite:
Blue kyanite, also known as disthen, is a remarkable stone prized for its blue colour. The name kyanite derives from the Greek word ‘kyanos’, meaning blue. This name refers to the gem’s characteristic colour. The term ‘dysthen’ is derived from the Greek ‘dysthénes’, meaning ‘double strength’, in reference to its birefringence. This means that it splits the light passing through it into two rays, creating an optical effect of doubling. Blue kyanite is mainly composed of aluminium silicate and owes its blue colour to the presence of traces of iron and titanium.
The main deposits of blue kyanite are found in Brazil, Nepal, Tanzania, the United States and Burma.
