Azurite-Malachite:

Its name derives from its composition, which combines azurite and malachite. Azurite was given its current name in 1824, derived from the Persian term ‘Lazhward’, meaning blue. However, it had already been known since ancient times: traces of this stone have been discovered in powder form in ointment jars dating from the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt.

The origin of the name ‘malachite’ is uncertain but may derive from the Greek ‘malakos’, meaning ‘soft’, as it is a soft stone. Another theory suggests that its name comes from another Greek word, ‘malache’, meaning ‘mauve’. The reason for this is that the colour of this mineral resembles that of mallow leaves.

Azurite-malachite displays a combination of colours, generally shades of deep blue (from the azurite) and green (from the malachite).Azurite and malachite are copper carbonates.

The main deposits of azurite-malachite are found in Namibia, Australia, Canada and the United States.
