Coral:
The term ‘coral’ derives from the Latin ‘corallium’, which in turn comes from the Greek word ‘korallion’.
Coral is not a mineral, but a skeletal structure created by colonies of marine organisms known as coral polyps.
Coral colonies thrive in reef ecosystems and build their skeletons by extracting calcium carbonate from seawater.
It has played an important role in the history of jewellery and decorative art, having been particularly popular in the Mediterranean since ancient times.
As well as being used in jewellery, it is also used to make objects and musical instruments.
The main coral-producing regions are: the Mediterranean, the South Pacific, Australia, the Red Sea and Japan.
