Tanzanite:

Its name derives from its country of origin, the main source of this type of zoisite. Unlike many other gemstones, tanzanite has no long history due to its relatively recent discovery. It was discovered in 1967 in the Merelani Mountains, in northern Tanzania. Its blue-violet colour is due to the presence of vanadium impurities. It forms in metamorphic rocks when zoisite is subjected to high temperatures and intense pressure. It is characterised by very pronounced polychroism, generally visible to the naked eye, with dominant shades of sapphire blue, violet and burgundy. Polychroism is a term used in gemmology and mineralogy to describe a mineral’s property of exhibiting changing colours when viewed from different angles. Most tanzanites with vivid colours have been heat-treated.
