Malachite:

The origin of the name ‘malachite’ is uncertain, but it may derive from the Greek word ‘malakos’, meaning ‘soft’, as it is a soft stone.

Another theory suggests that its name comes from another Greek word, ‘malache’, meaning ‘mauve’. The reason for this is that the colour of this mineral resembles that of mallow leaves. Malachite has a long history of use in jewellery and ornamentation, dating back to Ancient Egypt.

It was associated with the Egyptian goddess Hathor and was used to create protective amulets. Hathor is the goddess of Motherhood, Love, Beauty, Joy and Music.

Malachite is mainly composed of hydroxylated copper carbonate. Its green colour comes from the presence of copper in its composition.

It forms in metamorphic and oxidation deposits, often in association with other copper minerals.

Take care not to get your malachite wet: it would lose its lustre and could leach copper. The main malachite deposits are found in the Republic of the Congo, Russia, Zambia, Namibia, Australia and Mexico.
