Pyrite:

The name ‘pyrite’ derives from the Greek ‘pyr’, meaning fire. Pyrite has the ability to produce sparks when struck against a metal object. It was used as a flint.

It is also known as ‘fool’s gold’ as it was often mistaken for gold due to its metallic colour.

It is for this reason that, in Europe during the North American gold rush, pyrite was sometimes used to deceive gold prospectors.

Pyrite is an iron sulphide, which means it is mainly composed of iron and sulphur. It may contain traces of metals such as cobalt, nickel, copper and, ironically, gold as well.

Pyrite has significant industrial applications. It is used in the production of sulphuric acid, a compound essential to many industries, including the chemical, mining and metallurgical sectors.

The main deposits of pyrite are found in Spain, Italy, Sweden, Peru, Russia, the United States, Canada and China.
