Spinel:

The name spinel derives from the Latin word ‘spina’, meaning thorn. This refers to the pointed shape of spinel crystals and their very sharp edges. Spinel is a mineral belonging to the oxide group. It is often confused with other gemstones. Spinel specimens come in many different colours: red, pink, blue, green, black, colourless… Pink and red spinel, which so closely resemble rubies, have been nicknamed ‘ruby impostors’. A concrete example is the ‘Timur Ruby’, which was long reputed to be the largest ruby in the world, weighing 361 carats. It was even displayed amongst the British Crown Jewels. However, in 1851, it was reclassified as a spinel, revealing a historical error in its identification. Spinels are characterised by their hardness and have also been used in industry.
The main spinel deposits are found in Burma, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Russia.
