The sunstone:

It was given this name by the mineralogist Jean-Claude Delamétherie in 1801, due to its shimmering lustre, which evokes the brilliance of the sun. It is also known as heliolite, from the Greek ‘helios’, meaning ‘sun’. Sunstone is a feldspar – more specifically, adularia or orthoclase – which belongs to the silicate mineral family. This mineral is characterised by its brilliant sheen. This golden glow, caused by reflective mineral inclusions, creates a unique optical effect that evokes the brilliance of the sun. The formation of sunstone is the result of complex geological processes. It is generally found in igneous rocks, such as granites and pegmatites, where it develops slowly as the magma cools.
The main deposits of sunstone are found in Canada, the United States, India, Norway and Russia.
