Onyx:
The word ‘onyx’ derives from the ancient Greek word ‘ónux’. The etymology of the word is interesting as it is linked to the colour of the stone. In Greek, ‘ónux’ literally meant ‘nail’ or ‘claw’ due to the resemblance between the black and white bands of onyx and the ridges found on the human nail. Onyx is a type of agate characterised by alternating bands of white, grey and black. Agate is a variety of microcrystalline quartz distinguished by its diversity of colours and patterns. Agates form in cavities within volcanic rocks, where they develop slowly from aqueous solutions rich in silica. Their colours can vary, and they can be found in shades ranging from green to brown.
