Peridot:

The name ‘peridot’ derives from the Arabic word ‘faridat’, meaning ‘precious stone’ or ‘pearl’. It is also known by the Greek name ‘chrysolite’ (golden stone) or ‘olivine’.

It has probably been known and mined in Egypt since the first millennium BC. Among the historic peridot deposits, that of Zabargad is the most renowned, although it is now disused.

It was the Crusaders who introduced peridot to Europe. It was used to adorn religious artefacts and churches during the Middle Ages.

Peridot was particularly prized during the Baroque period. Even today, it remains a highly valued gemstone in Native American cultures.

Its characteristic green colour is due to the presence of iron in its composition.

Peridot forms in the Earth’s mantle, at considerable depths, and is usually brought to the surface by volcanic eruptions.

It is found in igneous, metamorphic and, occasionally, sedimentary rocks.

The main peridot deposits are located in Myanmar, South Africa, Australia, Brazil, China and the United States.
