Optical calcite:
Optical calcite, also known as double-refracting calcite, is a variety of calcite that exhibits the property of birefringence.
This means that it splits the light passing through it into two rays, creating an optical effect of double vision.
The etymology of the name ‘calcite’ derives from the Latin word ‘calx’, meaning ‘lime’. This name refers to its chemical composition (calcium carbonate).
It is possible that this stone was used by the Vikings to navigate during their sea voyages. Research into this subject is currently underway.
The main deposits of optical calcite are found in Iceland, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, China, Canada, England, Scotland and Japan.
