Green grossular garnet:
The word ‘garnet’ derives from the Latin ‘granatium’, meaning pomegranate, a bright red fruit.
Garnets form a family of minerals comprising several varieties that share a similar crystalline structure.
They come in a wide range of colours: green, red, orange, pink, yellow, brown, black…
The green varieties derive their colour from impurities of chromium and/or vanadium. Grossular garnet is distinguished by its colour, ranging from vivid emerald green to a more earthy olive green.
Garnets are often transparent to translucent. Their hardness and transparency make them ideal stones for jewellery.
The main deposits of grossular are in Kenya, Tanzania and Mali.
