Diopside:
The name ‘diopside’ derives from the Greek ‘di’, meaning ‘two’, and ‘opsis’, meaning ‘appearance’. It refers to the two directions of perfect cleavage exhibited by diopside. Chrome diopside is a green variety of diopside, characterised by its intense green colour due to the presence of chromium in its composition. Diopside is a silicate mineral belonging to the pyroxene group, and it comes in various colours, including green, black and colourless. It was discovered in Siberia in the 18th century and was used in the creation of Russian imperial jewellery. Indeed, the Russian variety is particularly renowned for its vivid green colour and superior quality.
The main deposits of diopside are found in Russia, Finland, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the United States.
