Chalcedony:
Blue chalcedony is a variety of microcrystalline quartz, composed mainly of silicon dioxide, just like carnelian. Blue chalcedony displays a colour palette ranging from light blue to pastel blue. Its colour may be due to the presence of trace elements such as iron. Blue chalcedony crystals form in cavities or fissures within rocks, often associated with water-related geological processes. The name ‘chalcedony’ derives from an ancient Greek city called Chalcedon, situated on the Sea of Marmara. It was regarded as a precious stone and symbolised gentleness and modesty.
The main deposits of blue chalcedony are found in Namibia, Brazil, India, Mexico and the United States.
