Sodalite:
Sodalite takes its name from sodium – ‘soda’ – and the Greek word ‘lithos’, meaning stone, in reference to its chemical composition.
It was the mineralogist Thomas Thomson who gave it its name in 1811. In fact, its discovery is relatively recent: it dates back only to the early 19th century.
It can be both opaque and slightly translucent; it is very rarely transparent. Sodalite is a mineral belonging to the silicate group and, more specifically, to the tectosilicate family.
Sodalite exhibits UV luminescence; in other words, it will show a glow when exposed to ultraviolet light. The main deposits of sodalite are found in Afghanistan, Canada, France, Greenland and Italy.
