Beryls:
The name ‘beryl’ derives from the ancient Greek ‘beryllos’, which originally referred to a greenish-blue stone, probably an emerald. It has since become the generic term for the entire family of minerals. Beryls are minerals composed of beryllium aluminium silicate. They include: emerald, green beryl, aquamarine, morganite and heliodor. Beryls form in igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary rocks from beryllium-rich solutions. They develop in a variety of geological environments. Beryls have been mined in various parts of the world since ancient times. Emeralds were mined in Egypt as early as 1500 BC, whilst aquamarines were prized in Greece as early as 300 BC. The main beryl deposits are found in: Brazil, Colombia, Zambia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Russia and the United States
