Since ancient times, it has been regarded as the farmers’ stone. The Greeks believed it promoted bountiful harvests. In European folklore from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, moss agate was hung from fruit trees or the horns of plough oxen to stimulate the growth of crops. In the 18th century, it was very popular amongst the aristocracy for the manufacture of ornaments and objects.
From a strictly gemmological point of view, it is not an agate – as it lacks a banded pattern – but a chalcedony. It contains dendritic inclusions, mainly chlorite, which give it its green colour and plant-like appearance. Its most significant deposits are found in India, Brazil and the United States, but it is also found in Europe.
In crystal healing, moss agate is recognised for its many benefits. It instils an immediate sense of emotional calm and helps restore inner balance. Wearing it fosters a deep harmony between body and mind, whilst encouraging a gentle letting go of life’s stresses. It is the ideal companion for cultivating peace of mind and connecting with the rejuvenating energies of nature.

Moss agate:
Moss agate is a variety of agate characterised by its moss-like inclusions. It is from these patterns that it takes its name.
These inclusions may be green in colour, but moss agate can also feature white, brown or red hues.
Agates form in the cavities of volcanic rocks, where they develop slowly from aqueous solutions rich in silica.
The moss-like inclusions form when minerals, such as chlorite or hornblende, are deposited within the agate’s cavities during its formation.
The main deposits of moss agate are found in India, the United States, Russia, China and Brazil.
