Carnelian:
Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, which itself belongs to the quartz family. The name ‘carnelian’ derives from the Latin word ‘cornum’, meaning ‘cherry’, in reference to its red colour. Carnelian is recognisable by its colour, which ranges from light orange to brownish red. Inclusions are common in carnelian and may include bands or patterns that add to its aesthetic appeal. Its warm hue and colour variations make it a prized gemstone in jewellery. Carnelian was often carved into scarabs, amulets and cylindrical seals in Mesopotamia, Egypt and other ancient regions. These objects were used as talismans for protection and power.
The main deposits of carnelian are found in India, Brazil, Uruguay, Russia, the United States, Germany and Australia.
