Lapis lazuli:

From the Latin ‘Lapis’, meaning stone, and ‘Lazuli’: like the colour azure, borrowed from the Persian ‘Lāžward’. Lapis lazuli was known as sapphire until the Middle Ages because of its colour.

It is composed of lazurite, which gives it its intense blue colour, as well as calcite and pyrite.

It is regarded as a symbol of divinity and has adorned religious artefacts, temples and sculptures since ancient Egypt.

Lapis lazuli is also ground into a powder and applied as eye shadow or used as a pigment to create ultramarine blue, as in Vermeer’s painting ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’.

Afghanistan is renowned for producing some of the finest specimens of lapis lazuli.

The main deposits of lapis lazuli are found in Afghanistan, Chile, Russia, Pakistan and Tajikistan.
